Minifree is [currently not] hiring!

This is on hold. There are no jobs available at the moment

If you’re interested in applying, contact Leah Rowe using the information on the contact page.

Minifree is in need of an employee in the southern coast of England (exact location to be determined) to:

  • Flash libreboot BIOS replacement and install/configure/maintain GNU+Linux (mostly Debian) onto laptops, desktops, servers and other products that Minifree sells.
  • Fix bugs and submit patches to the software projects that we use. You might also write software, occasionally.
  • Occasionally also install BSD
  • Handle shipments of systems to customers
  • Possibly handle emails from time to time
  • Provide technical support to customers

You will be working alongside Leah Rowe, who is the founder and leader of both Minifree and Libreboot. You will be helping her to expand both Minifree and Libreboot, to reach their maximum potential. Leah will also be working alongside, doing the same job as you. Everyone pulls their weight at Minifree, especially during busy times.

You will:

  • Strongly believe in free software, and that it should be possible in the future to use it exclusively, and have a desire to work towards that goal
  • Believe in libreboot, and have a desire to help grow the project long-term.
  • Not be transphobic, sexist, homophobic or racist or anything. (Leah is transgender, and expects you to accept her and treat her decently like a human being. You will be treated the same). This is non-negotiable.
  • Be OK wielding the occasional soldering iron, ideally.
  • Have a knowledge in computing, and be competent with GNU+Linux system configuration
  • Have prior experience in firmware development, or software development related to libreboot or projects like it (not essential, but desirable)
  • Knowledge of C and BASH (some software development may be required), and other languages ideally (desirable)
  • Be a total geek who lives and breathes GNU+Linux on a daily basis. You will be an IRC-based humanoid who spends all of their time in the terminal.
  • Have a knowledge of widely used development technologies e.g. Git

Interviewing is done on a flexible basis, over IRC and Tox, and/or telephone call. It will likely not be a strict interview, but we will want to get to know you to screen you for suitability.

Overseas applicants are also welcome to apply. You will need to deal with work visas if you are from outside the EU or EEA (you would have to move to the southern coastal area of England, since you’d be working in Minifree’s office)

The vacancy is expected to begin in March 2017, though may be in February or January. Minifree is moving, so it may take longer or less time, depending on how smoothly the transition goes.

Salary starts at 10 GBP per hour, 40 hours per week. Pay rises are reviewed on a 6 month basis (your salary will rise after 6 months, if you do well enough). Pay and hours are both negotiable. The employment type is PAYE, on Minifree’s payroll. This means that you will have all the usual rights in the workplace e.g. sick pay, maternity pay, annual leave, etc.

(a higher starting wage will be considered, based on skills/experience and your living/travel arrangements)

(salary will be raised each year according to inflation and cost of living increases)

We don’t have a dress code at Minifree. You can express yourself however you like. We also have safe space policies; trans people (any type) are welcome to apply, and will not be judged negatively in any way (your boss will be trans).

Minifree believes in diversity, and is an equal opportunities employer. We will not discriminate based on race/colour, marital status, age, gender identity/expression, sexuality, nationality, religion, or functional/neurological diverse attributes that you may have. This includes anything else protected by equality laws in the UK. We believe in human rights.
