A GNU/Linux laptop that Respects Your Freedom!
From the user-friendly Trisquel 7 LTS GNU/Linux operating system right down to the free (libre) and open source Libreboot BIOS (or UEFI) replacement (based on coreboot), the fast and powerful Libreboot T400 from Minifree runs entirely on software that anyone can freely use, adapt, and share infinitely without restriction. These laptops meet and exceed strict freedom guidelines, as certified by the Free Software Foundation.
Unlike most computer products, your Libreboot T400 comes without unwanted “bloatware”, DRM, spyware or restrictions on how you use your computer. Your Libreboot T400 obeys you, and nobody else. The hardware is selected, specifically to run with 100% free software in the operating system, with zero binary blobs. Libreboot systems are an escape from the abuse that you get with other computer products. Even Richard Stallman uses libreboot!
Minifree (previously named Gluglug) is the first company to ever achieve Respects your Freedom certification from the Free Software Foundation, for a laptop. Three times in a row! The director of Minifree also donates to the Free Software Foundation.
Shipping worldwide! (USA and Europe included) UPS is used for all shipments. All orders come with a 2 year warranty as standard, with free tech support. The prices on this page are in Euros. If your country doesn’t use Euros (e.g. USA, UK, Switzerland), Minifree will provide an invoice with the price converted to your local currency, for your convenience. Use xe.com currency converter to check current exchange rates.
Your Freedom. Your Libreboot
Libreboot offers several practical advantages over proprietary BIOS/UEFI firmware; faster boot speeds, better security and customization to name a few. Unlike proprietary firmware, Libreboot does not contain spyware or backdoors.
Libreboot (based on coreboot) is officially endorsed by the Free Software Foundation, as boot firmware that is verified to respect and protect your privacy, security and freedom.
Minifree’s founder is also the main libreboot developer (and founder of the libreboot project). Profits from Minifree sales directly fund the libreboot project. If you want to pay more (plus UK VAT, if applicable), you can request this in a custom notes textbox at checkout and Minifree will add the extra amount to the invoice. Proceeds go towards paying for new development work that benefits the libreboot project.
Trisquel is user-friendly, secure and respects privacy
Based on Ubuntu, the user-friendly Trisquel GNU/Linux operating system comes preinstalled. Trisquel comes with all the standard applications for Web browsing, instant messaging, office and productivity, graphics editing, multimedia and more. Thousands of extra applications are also available to install from the Trisquel repositories, using the simple “Add/Remove Applications” feature provided. It even has games!
Trisquel is also used at the Free Software Foundation, on their servers and workstations.
Trisquel can easily replace your current Windows or MacOS operating system. Give it a try!
High quality keyboard, comfortable typing
This keyboard is a dream to type on! It’s one of the most comfortable laptop keyboards available. Unlike most laptop keyboards, this one is also resistant to accidental spills.
A red stick in the centre of the keyboard, the “TrackPoint” or “nub” as some call it, acts as a pointing device, with buttons below the keyboard. This is much more efficient than a touchpad.
The Libreboot T400 also features a touchpad, for those who prefer touchpads.
A USB mouse is available for an extra €20 (mention it in the “notes” box on the checkout, and it will be included on the invoice).
Fast, durable and powerful hardware
This fast, 14″ laptop is built with a strong chassis and shell, guaranteeing that the laptop will last many years, withstanding even the most demanding conditions while you’re out and about.
Whether in the home, office or on leisure, your Libreboot T400 will be your faithful companion for many years to come. An Intel Core 2 Duo main processor and GMA 4500MHD video processor provides more than enough computing performance for everyday tasks including gaming, high-definition video, multimedia and (if you’re a really smart cookie) programming.
The Libreboot T400 from Minifree can easily replace your current laptop or desktop computer.
Advantages compared to the Libreboot X200:
The Libreboot X200 and T400 both have the same CPU, GPU, northbridge, southbridge and other components, based on the same chipset design (and by the same ODM, Wistron). In fact, the libreboot source code for X200 and T400 are almost identical, except for a few minor differences. The differences between the X200 and T400 are in other areas:
- TrackPoint and touchpad pointing devices (the X200 only has a TrackPoint)
- Socketed CPUs, easily upgraded (on the X200, the CPUs are hard soldered)
- Stereo speakers (instead of a single speaker)
- Bigger screen size (14.1″, instead of 12.1″)
- 2nd SATA port built in (software RAID is possible, or it can have a DVD/CD RW drive built in)
- Bigger keyboard
- Bigger internal antennas (better wifi signal)
- Bigger fan/heatsink, and 2 vents instead of 1 (better cooling)
Ports and WiFi Kill Switch
The Libreboot T400 from Minifree features a 1Gbps Ethernet port, 3 USB ports, jacks for mic and headphones, an ExpressCard slot, an anti-theft lock slot, VGA port and more. It also features a CD/DVD RW drive (alternatively, a 2nd HDD/SSD is possible).
A radio kill switch allows you to immediately disable the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters, when using the laptop inside areas that are insecure, in hospitals or on aeroplanes.
High quality heatsink, efficient cooling solution
Minifree also applies a fresh layer of Arctic MX-4, one of the best thermal compounds on the market, to ensure optimal cooling performance on every laptop.
What storage and RAM configuration should I choose?
The default option for the Libreboot T400 comes with 4GiB RAM and a 160GB HDD for storage. Minifree also provides upgrade options; up to 8GiB RAM, and a 240GB SSD or 1TB HDD.
An SSD can bring with it faster application and OS load times, while also slightly increasing battery life due to lower power consumption. Meanwhile, if you need more than 240GB storage, the 1TB HDD is a good option. If you want extra performance and storage (more than 240GB), one option would be to use the 240GB SSD, and get an external 1TB (or higher) USB HDD for extra storage, which Trisquel will automatically recognize when you plug it in. The Libreboot T400 also has an additional SATA port, which Minifree provides secondary HDDs or SSDs for.
The 8GiB RAM upgrade is useful, because more RAM means that you’re less likely to rely on the “swap” partition on the HDD or SSD (use of swap reduces system performance, because the HDD/SSD isn’t as fast as the RAM). This can be useful for people with more demanding requirements; software developers and graphics designers, for instance. For regular usage, it also means that you can run more applications simultaneously.
More storage? RAID? Yes!
The SATA slot for the CD/DVD RW drive can have a second HDD or SSD installed, replacing the CD/DVD RW drive. Minifree can provide this, in one of the following configurations:
- RAID1 (two identical drives, same capacity. e.g. 2x1TB HDD). This functions effectively as a backup solution, with redundancy (continuous operation) even if one of the drives are inoperable. This can also boost read/write performance.
- RAID0 (two identical drives, same capacity. e.g. 2x1TB HDD). Not redundant (both drives need to be functional), but can boost read/write performance (more so than RAID1), and increases the usable capacity compared to RAID1.
- 2nd HDD or SSD for data and/or backup. For instance, the operating system could be installed on a 240GB SSD, and an additional 1TB HDD could be used for extra data or backup.
If you want a 2nd HDD or SSD, but you also want a CD/DVD RW drive, there are USB CD/DVD drives that you can purchase online. These are all generic, and will work automatically in Trisquel GNU/Linux.
Works in every country
The Libreboot T400 from Minifree ships worldwide!. The AC-DC adapter (charger) is 100-240V auto-switching, so it will work in all countries. Minifree will include an EU, UK or USA power cable, depending on your shipping address.
If your country uses another type of power plug, Minifree can provide you with a €5 EUR reimbursement (on request) to cover the costs of purchasing the appropriate adapter. Alternatively, Minifree will source the appropriate adapter (or an actual cable) that will work in your country, and include it in the package. More plug types will be available by default, at a later date.
Do you travel? Minifree can provide extra power cables for €10 EUR each (e.g. EU and US cable). If you need extra cables, mention it in the “notes” box on the checkout and they will be included on the invoice. Extra chargers are also available, for €30 EUR each.
Extra batteries are available, for €80 EUR each. If you require extra batteries, mention it in the “notes” box on the checkout and they will be included on the invoice.
Libreboot and GNU/FSF stickers are included (for lid and palmrest) with each laptop, at no extra cost.
Free tech support
Free tech support is also provided, for all customers. If you ever have any questions about your laptop, or need help with anything, Minifree is always happy to answer them via email, IRC (vimuser on freenode) or telephone. He can be contacted, using the information on the contact page.
